Food on Safari in Uganda: Diet Tips and Traveler’s Guide
One of the biggest “problems” you’ll face on safari in Uganda is that the food is so good and plentiful, you may need to go on a diet after your trip! Ugandan lodges and safari camps pride themselves on offering delicious meals, with plenty of fresh, local produce to keep you well-fed and happy throughout your journey. Here we advise about diet and food tips for Uganda Safaris

Simply let us know at the time of booking, and we’ll ensure the chefs are aware of your requirements before you arrive.
Dietary Needs & Allergies

Most safari lodges are small and intimate, which means you’ll often have the chance to speak directly with the chef or camp manager about your needs.

Food allergies can be accommodated, but if you have a life-threatening allergy, please carry your epi-pen with you at all times—even on game drives. You won’t want to miss out on a surprise bush breakfast or dinner!

Some special requests (such as strict kosher) may involve extra costs, especially if special food needs to be flown in. However, several lodges in Uganda do offer kosher-friendly kitchens.
Staying Active on Safari
After enjoying all the amazing food, you may want to keep fit. A morning jog in the savannah is not recommended—and in most places, it isn’t allowed unless you have an armed ranger with you. Instead, we suggest:

Bringing a jump rope or a personal exercise routine you can do in your room.

Using yoga mats provided at some lodges.

Booking accommodation with a gym if fitness is a priority for you.
Fresh Fruits, Vegetables, and Salads
Uganda is blessed with some of the tastiest organic fruits and vegetables in the world. Most lodges and hotels ensure produce is washed in clean water, making it safe for you to enjoy.

Avoid eating fruits or vegetables that cannot be peeled when you’re outside lodges or restaurants.

If you buy fruit from roadside markets, always wash it with safe drinking water before eating.

Don’t miss out—Ugandan pineapples, mangoes, bananas, and avocados are a true highlight!
Water Safety
Staying hydrated is vital, especially in Uganda’s warm climate.

Many lodges offer filtered or purified water for refills—help reduce plastic waste by bringing a refillable water bottle.

Tap water in towns may not cause serious illness, but your stomach might not be used to it. Stick to bottled or purified water during your trip.
Snacks & Safari Etiquette

Do not keep snacks in your tent—clever monkeys and baboons can unzip tents and steal food. If you need snacks for medical reasons, ask staff to store them safely or carry airtight containers.

Please do not give sweets or treats to local children. While it may seem kind, it can keep children away from school waiting for tourists and may harm their dental health. Supporting schools, clinics, or community projects through your safari is a far more meaningful way to give back.
