Tips for planning a trip to Uganda
Before you start, a little forward planning is always helpful. It’s good to consider the objectives of the trip, the age of your group and where you will be travelling from in Uganda or overseas.
While our standard itineraries will suit the purposes of many people, all of our Uganda tours can also be tailor-made to suit your needs.
Step 1: Send Inquiry
1. Contact us to Research and Choose the Right Time to Visit
Before booking your trip with Msafiri Tours, it’s important to research and choose the right time to visit Uganda. The country experiences a tropical climate, with two main seasons – dry and wet. The dry season, which runs from June to September and December to February, is generally considered the best time to visit as the weather is more favourable for outdoor activities and wildlife sightings.
2. We Create an Itinerary
Once you have decided on the best time to visit, it’s time to create an itinerary for your trip to Uganda. Start by identifying the top activities and attractions you want to visit, such as Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for gorilla trekking, Murchison Falls National Park for game drives, Queen Elizabeth National Park for a safari or a specific community or Uganda cultural group. We will consider the time you have available and plan your days accordingly, allowing for some flexibility to explore the unexpected gems along the way.
3. Get the Necessary Travel Documents
To enter Uganda, make sure you have a valid passport with at least six months’ validity remaining. Depending on your nationality, most visitors to Uganda need to obtain a visa in advance or upon arrival. Check the visa requirements for your country and allow sufficient time for the application process if needed.
4. Vaccinations and Health
Precautions
Before traveling to Uganda, it’s advisable to consult with a healthcare professional to get up-to-date information about the required vaccinations or medications. Common vaccinations for Uganda include yellow fever, typhoid, hepatitis A and B, and tetanus. Additionally, consider taking precautions against malaria by taking anti-malarial medication and using mosquito repellents.
5. Pack Accordingly
When packing for your trip to Uganda, consider the activities you’ll be engaging in and the climate. Pack lightweight and breathable clothing suitable for warm weather during the day, and some warmer layers for the cooler evenings, especially if you’re visiting higher altitude areas. Don’t forget to pack comfortable walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, and any necessary medication or personal items.
6. Respect the Local Culture
Uganda is a country with diverse cultures and traditions, and it’s important to respect and appreciate the local customs during your visit. Learn a few basic greetings and phrases in Luganda or the local language of the area you will visit, dress modestly when visiting communities or religious sites, and always ask for permission before taking photographs of people.
7. Engage in Responsible Tourism.
While exploring Uganda’s natural wonders, it’s crucial to engage in responsible tourism practices to minimize your impact on the environment and support the local communities. We shall help you choose eco-friendly accommodation options, avoid single-use plastic, and support local businesses and artisans by purchasing souvenirs directly from them.
8. Confirm with Payment:
A tour deposit (usually 20% of the quote) will be required to secure the availability of hotel/flight/guide, etc. when you confirm the booking. You can pay via Paypal, credit card and wire transfer. Step-by-step instructions on payment and things followed will be given by your tour reservation officer. For more information regarding payment, please refer to the Payment Guide.
