Kampala, the capital city of Uganda, is a vibrant and bustling destination with a rich history and culture. If you’re a first-time visitor to this lively city, a shared walking tour led by a knowledgeable local is the perfect way to gain an intimate overview of Kampala.
The tour begins at the Craft Market on Buganda Road, where you will meet your guide. Make sure to arrive at least 10 minutes before the tour start time. Your guide will be easy to spot, holding a black umbrella with the local partner’s logo and the words “Free Tour Starts Here” on it.
During the tour, you will have the opportunity to visit both popular attractions and hidden gems. You’ll walk through the bustling markets, where you can taste fresh in-season fruit and try curious street food like Rolex and grasshoppers. Engage with the vibrant people of the city and test your haggling skills with local vendors. The spice and herb markets will tantalize your senses with their wonderful aromas.
But the tour isn’t just about food and shopping. Your guide will also share the important events in Kampala’s history, giving you valuable insights into the city’s past. You’ll visit historical monuments like Constitutional Square, the World War Memorial Monument, the Independence Monument, the King Muteesa II Monument, and the Main Post Office.
The tour lasts for around 3 hours, and you’ll be part of a small group limited to 4 participants. This means you’ll enjoy a more personalized experience and have the opportunity to ask your guide questions along the way.
At the end of the walking tour, you have the option to upgrade your experience by adding a 1-hour visit to the Gaddafi National Mosque. This stunning mosque, also known as the Uganda National Mosque, offers a breathtaking view of the city from its minaret. You’ll learn about the city’s expansion from the spot where Fredrick Lugard established the old city of Kampala.
Whether you choose to upgrade or not, the tour concludes back at the Craft Market. You can opt for a short boda (local motorbike taxi) ride back or simply walk if you prefer. Once back at the Craft Market, you’ll have the opportunity to buy souvenirs or indulge in some local coffee at the 1000 Cups cafe.
To ensure a smooth experience, make sure to cancel up to 24 hours in advance if you need to. You can reserve your spot now and pay later, allowing you to keep your travel plans flexible.
Before the tour, remember to dress comfortably and wear appropriate footwear. Trainers or walking shoes are recommended. Also, check the weather forecast and bring a jacket if necessary.
