Volunteering with People with Disabilities in Uganda & East Africa

Volunteer on our Uganda Disability Volunteering Programs and across East Africa for a life-changing opportunity to make a real difference. These programs are designed to support children, youth, and adults living with disabilities in Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania.

Many individuals with mental or physical disabilities in East Africa face stigma, neglect, and lack of access to essential services. By joining our volunteer projects, you will not only provide much-needed care and support but also help build inclusive communities where everyone is valued.

Why Volunteer with People with Disabilities in Uganda?

Volunteering with people with disabilities is more than service—it’s a transformative journey. You’ll:

  • Offer companionship and emotional support to individuals facing social isolation.

  • Help provide education, therapy, and life skills training in schools, care centres, and community projects.

  • Advocate for disability rights and inclusion, challenging stigma and promoting dignity.

  • Build cross-cultural friendships while experiencing the warmth and resilience of Ugandan communities.

Your efforts will contribute to breaking down barriers, fostering acceptance, and giving children and adults with disabilities the opportunity to live fuller lives.

What Volunteer Roles Are Available?

Our Special Needs Volunteering Program offers diverse and rewarding opportunities:

  • Teaching support in special needs schools (literacy, numeracy, arts, and life skills).

  • Caregiving assistance with daily activities such as feeding, dressing, and mobility support.

  • Therapy support for physiotherapists, occupational therapists, or speech therapists.

  • Recreational activities like sports, games, music, and creative workshops.

  • Community outreach to raise awareness and reduce stigma around disability.

Whether you are a student, professional, retiree, or gap year traveller, there is a role for you. No prior experience is required—just compassion, patience, and an open mind.

Where You’ll Volunteer

Volunteers are placed in:

  • Special needs schools and centres across Uganda and East Africa.

  • Community-based projects supporting children in slums and rural villages.

  • Rehabilitation and care facilities offering therapy and vocational training.

You’ll work alongside local teachers, caregivers, and families—learning as much from them as they will from you.

The Impact You’ll Make

Your time as a disability volunteer in Uganda can:

  • Improve quality of life for children and adults with disabilities.

  • Strengthen families by providing support and relief to caregivers.

  • Promote social inclusion and challenge harmful stereotypes.

  • Inspire long-term change by empowering communities to embrace diversity.

Even small acts—like reading with a child, playing games, or listening to stories—can make a world of difference.
