Before applying for your medical elective placement in Uganda, make sure you meet the following requirements:

• Enrollment in a Recognized Medical School: You must be currently registered as a medical student or healthcare trainee at an accredited institution.

• Relevant Medical Insurance: Valid medical and travel insurance covering your stay and any clinical activities.

• Immunizations: Up-to-date vaccinations, including Yellow Fever (mandatory), Hepatitis B, Typhoid, Tetanus, and others as recommended.

• Visa and Travel Documents: A valid visa to enter Uganda; some internships may assist with visa support letters.

• Health Clearance: Medical clearance confirming fitness to participate in clinical placements.

• Language Proficiency: Basic English communication skills are essential as it is the primary language used in clinical settings.

• Pre-Departure Preparation: Completion of any required pre-elective paperwork, orientation, and submission of necessary documentation.

Requirements for Elective placements for medical students in Uganda

Firstly, it’s crucial to ensure that you have completed the necessary academic prerequisites before embarking on a medical electives internship in Uganda. Typically, this will involve having completed a certain number of years of medical school or having a specific level of medical knowledge and expertise.

In addition to academic requirements, medical elective internships in Uganda may have specific language proficiency requirements. Since English is one of the official languages in Uganda, it is essential to have a good command of the English language to effectively communicate with patients, healthcare professionals, and colleagues.

Another vital requirement for medical electives internships in Uganda is obtaining the appropriate visa and work permit. This involves contacting the Ugandan embassy or consulate in your country and providing the necessary documentation, such as a letter of acceptance from a Ugandan healthcare institution, proof of travel insurance, and a valid passport. It is advisable to start the visa application process well in advance to allow for any unexpected delays.

Lastly, it is highly recommended to have medical malpractice insurance coverage before starting your medical electives internship in Uganda. This insurance protects you in case of any unforeseen medical incidents or claims that may arise during your internship.

Criteria for Internship opportunities in Uganda for medical students

• Confirmation of studies or professional experience
• We require a letter from your college or employer confirming that you are presently taking a health care program or are a health care professional.
• We also need these documents for those only taking an elective medical internship and who wish to participate in our weekly community health fairs.

Travel Insurance

• We include 12-month multi-trip travel insurance within our program cost.  If you prefer, you can use another travel insurance policy you have
• We need to see proof of your travel insurance.  For your well-being, it is a compulsory requirement of our program.

The insurance policy should provide essential cover which includes:

• Accident medical expense coverage.
• Illness medical expense coverage.
• Emergency medical evacuation coverage.
• Baggage & personal effects loss coverage.
• Twelve months of insurance coverage.
• Multiple trips of up to 90 days

Proof of vaccinations

The vaccines required are Yellow fever, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B.

The following vaccines are optional for Trujillo but are recommended for those travelling to certain areas of Uganda.  These vaccines are Malaria, Rabies, and Typhoid.
