1-day Ngamba Island Chimpanzee tour

Ngamba Chimp Island is located in the Bay of Lake Victoria in Uganda. It is home to over 100 rescued chimpanzees, who are cared for by the Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary and monitored by the Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Project. The project works to protect the endangered chimpanzees, while also providing an educational experience to visitors. Visitors are able to observe chimpanzees as they feed, play, and interact with each other while learning about their behaviour and social dynamics. Visitors also receive an in-depth look at the sanctuary’s conservation efforts, and how they are working to protect the chimpanzees and their habitat.

After arriving at the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre, you will be briefed on the exciting activities available at Ngamba Island. Then, you will board a speed boat or a regular boat, depending on the time of day, and make your way to the island. Once you arrive, you will be able to get up close and personal with the chimpanzees, watching them feed from a raised wooden platform. You will be able to join in the fun and observe the chimpanzees’ behaviour in their natural environment.

On Ngamba Island, you can experience a wide range of activities, from viewing and feeding chimpanzees to shopping in the island gift shop, bird watching, meeting other wildlife, swimming on the equator, and visiting the neighbouring fishing villages. For those looking to have some fun, you can join the feeding team and feed your favourite chimpanzee from the platform.

If you’re feeling hungry, you can enjoy freshly-made lunches, ranging from $10 to $15. Please note, that for the safety of the environment, bringing packed lunches and drinks to the island is not allowed. This is to enforce the Environment Management Policy and System of the Chimpanzee Trust established since the inception of Ngamba Island Sanctuary in 1998

When is the best time to go on the Ngamba Island Chimpanzee trip

Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary is open all year round, however, the best time to visit is during the dry season. From late May to early October, the weather is much drier, allowing for easier access and more comfortable conditions for visitors. During this period, the wildlife is more active and the vegetation is lush and green.
